Characteristic: Atlantic Salmon - Salmo salar - Wild Atlantic salmon is one of the most highly endangered species on the eastern seaboard. All Atlantic salmon that is sold or served is farm raised. There is no fishery commercial or sporting. In the Atlantic there is only one species of salmon versus the Pacific where there are several species. Atlantic salmon are considered to be an andromedas species, as they migrate from fresh water, where they are hatched, then to the ocean where they grow and mature, then back to the fresh water to breed. The salmons ability to return back to where they were hatched, to lay their eggs, has been a mystery for biologists for years. This happens with all Atlantic salmon unless they are in a land locked lake. With management of the specie since 1967 they are starting to see some increase in stocks, but they are years, perhaps decades from where they want to be with the wild Atlantic salmon population. Salmon are known for their determined fighting abilities when hooked, they dance on top of the water and have great leaping abilities.
